This is the seventh in a series of blog entries exploring the problem of binge drinking on American college campuses. We examined even the possibility of making all campuses dry. We have discussed all of the negative consequences associated with binge drinking including the fact that for most students it is illegal and can get them into trouble with the law.
This blog entry will try to answer this question: why, despite the knowledge of the possible negative consequences, including trouble with the law, do college students persist in not only drinking alcohol, but binge drinking regularly?
As a counselor for both in-class and online alcohol classes, with extensive knowledge on the subject as well as through years of counseling students, the reason is quite obvious – to enrich their social lives!
Let’s face it, teenagers are nothing if not totally self-absorbed. For the vast majority of us, the time between middle school and college our social lives and fitting are one of the most important thing in our lives.
Mindset and Habit
Whether you like it or not, alcohol consumption on college campuses has become the mind set in this country. One of the things many students look forward to is the chance to party. Drinking has become as much a part of college life as the library and textbooks.
The following blog entry will look at how alcohol use enriches social life in college and what can be done to at least curb binge drinking.
