Foods that Contain Alcohol

If you are trying to avoid, limit or abstain from alcohol, then you should be aware of the common foods that contain alcohol. When quitting it is not only good to enroll in an alcohol awareness program but it is helpful to learn more about what to protect yourself from. Here are some foods that you may want to avoid, especially in the beginning of your journey towards sobriety.

Read the Label

If you're seriously trying to cut all types of alcohol from your diet, then it will be vital to read labels. You may be surprised at the different types of foods that contain alcohol. They include:

  • Pure and Artificial Flavor Extracts
  • Malt Vinegar
  • Dijon Mustard
  • Various Types of Sauces (Bordelaise)
  • Fondues
  • Various Desserts (Rum cake, Mousse, Cherries Jubilee, Fruit Cake)
  • Cooking Spray

The amount of alcohol in these items may be very small and cooking often evaporates the alcohol but it is still important to know what's going into your body so you can make the best decision for yourself.

Find an Alternative

When cooking, if the recipe calls for an ingredient that contains alcohol, simply substitute this ingredient for one that doesn't contain alcohol. For example, if a recipe calls for sherry, use apple cider, orange or pineapple juice instead. Peach syrup can be used instead of Brandy. Use regular oil instead of cooking spray.

If you prefer not to substitute the ingredient, then leave it out altogether. Most likely, you won't be able to tell the difference and the outcome will be equally as flavorful.

Don't Quit

If you want to avoid alcohol, stick with the daily commitment and don’t quit! Enroll in an alcohol education program or attend a local AA meeting. Stay strong and focused!
